Orphaned at 6 weeks old and an outcast in the pasture with fellow foals, HR Smart Rey, “Gus,” didn’t let that stand in his way of greatness. With six AQHA World Show qualifications, a championship in the L2 Amateur Heading and several top-10 finishes at the AQHA World Show in tie-down roping and senior heading, Gus has passed his winning ways onto his offspring.
Gus’s offspring showed up at the first-ever Riata Buckle with CG McClintock making the short-go in the #12.5 and HR Oscar Rey competing on the head side. Gus also produced HR Barney Rey, a 2016 gelding that has won more than $50,000 at WSTR and US Roping events.
While the Harrisons have had tremendous success crossing Gus with mares that have bloodlines tracing back to OSU Pistol Pete, Gus crosses well on all types of mares.
“The horses Gus produces handle the pressure,” Kathy Harrison said. “I took HR Oscar Rey to the AQHA World Show after he’d only been to two horse shows to qualify and had never stayed away from home and he won the amateur select heading. When the big lights kicked on, he wasn’t worried and was all business. All of his offspring have that trait.”
