Eyeing the Riches: Rahlmann and Rich Advance to Gold Medal Round
Coy Rahlmann and Douglas Rich are headed to the WCRA Days of ’47 Gold Medal Round after winning the second performance of the semi-finals with a 4.69-second run, worth $1,600.

Coy Rahlmann and Douglas Rich punched their ticket to the WCRA Days of ’47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo Gold Medal Round after winning the second performance semi-finals.

Rahlmann and Rich beat seven teams with a 4.69-second run, worth $1,600, with Tanner Green and Will Woodfin on their tails with a 4.97-seconds run.

“We were the second to last team out and I told Doug, ‘I feel like we obviously need to go to the lead when we go to the arena so we need to do whatever it takes,’” said Rahlmann, who won the RNCFR team roping title in 2020 heading for Ryan VonAhn. “It was looking fairly easy at first, and then Tanner (Green) went 4.9. I knew our steer was tricky, so I told myself for when I backed [in the box] that it was like any one-head ProRodeo.”

Rahlmann and Rich drew a stronger steer that they had seen go at the Livingston (Montana) Roundup Rodeo.

“He left the gates strong, and he acted real fresh in the arena,” Rahlmann said. “I knew he was going to be a little tricky to get by.”

While Rich heeling on his spotted grey, Rahlmann was shaping the go-round steer on his 11-year-old sorrel gelding, Charlie.

“Charlie is working pretty good right now,” he said. “He’s kind of giving me a step when I throw to kind of get away from them. He’s also letting me hold him up long enough to let me get their head and shoulders before I turn them off. I think a lot of it is just keeping your horse in control right there to where you can determine how fast you square them.”

Charlie made the start of that run possible even though he was anxious while backing into the heading box.

“I felt like he scored pretty good,” Rahlmann said. “He gave me a good go at the steer. That’s just kind of him. When the crowds get to rolling, he gets a little bouncy and tight in there.”

During a crucial time in ProRodeo, Rahlmann and Rich are anticipating their ProRodeo run at the Fiesta Days Rodeo in Spanish Fork, Utah. Depending on how their first run goes, they may turn out of the WCRA Days of ’47 Cowboy Games and Rodeo Gold Medal Round.

“If we’re sitting pretty good in the first round (at the Fiesta Days Rodeo) then we’re going to rope our second one over there, but if we’re long or have a penalty, then we’ll turn our second one out over there,” Rahlmann said.
