Paul Tierney was a staple at the Cinch Timed Event Championship for the first 29 years of the event in Guthrie, Okla. In that time, he garnered four titles, 1987, 1991, 1997 and 2000. Father Paul said of the contest: “The Timed Event is not for the faint hearted. It’s not an event you can just ease through. There’s nothing average about it. It’s a test of all-around ability. I’ve always told my boys, ‘Play on your strong points and control your weaknesses.’” The first year Tierney decided not to enter, 2014, his youngest son, Paul David, won the event. It marked the first time two generations of the same family took top honors in Guthrie. Paul David said, “It’s a big part of the Tierney family to be in the Timed Event. I’m very happy to win this thing. Now to try to pass up my dad’s buckle collection.”
