The first pen of team roping steers from the 2024 NFR will make their third run inside the Thomas & Mack in Round 7.
The medium-sized, stronger steers were roped in Rounds 1 and 4 where 3.7 seconds and 4.1 seconds won the rounds. Steer 48 is the high-money steer for Round 7. Tyler Wade and Wesley Thorp won Round 1 on this steer for $33,687.18 a man with a 3.7. Erich Rogers and Paul Eaves won $8,693 a man on Steer 48 in Round 4 with a 4.3.
While Clay Smith and Coleby Payne have a steer that hasn’t been caught yet, 26-time World Champion Trevor Brazile worries not.
“I talked to Clay—a steer ahead this early is amazing, because you’re taking good starts so it’s easy,” Brazile said. “If you happen to break a barrier it’s no big deal, and if you get out when you shouldn’t have, you can still win a round. You’re still going to be a steer ahead.”
As for the standings leaders Wade and Thorp, Brazile also notes they have a solid draw tonight that can possibly move them up in the aggregate as well.
“TWade has what he needs,” Brazile explained. “None of the Top 3 have moved up very far in the average. He has a chance for an average check.”
