Nicky Northcott Holds Commanding Lead in Resistol Rookie Race While on NFR Bubble

Nicky Northcott sits No. 21 in the 2025 PRCA world standings, all while holding an overwhelming lead in the Resistol Rookie of the Year race with $78,670.32 won on the year.

The 18-year-old from Stephenville, Texas, is roping with two-time World Champion Clay Smith and has won over $60,000 since June 5. Their efforts this summer have Northcott leading the Resistol Rookie Heeler of the Year standings by $43,202.30, ahead of Arizona cowboy Reece Wadhams. After tying for the win in Kennewick, Washington, Aug. 23, Northcott has picked up momentum to finish the 2025 season with a serious shot at his first NFR.

June Earnings: $21,680

Northcott’s standout June performance came at the Reno Rodeo, where he and Smith ended up third in the average with a time of 17.6 seconds on three head to win $7,403 a man in the average alone.

The veteran and the rookie kicked off July with a second-place finish in Cody, Wyoming, with a 4.0-second run.

A big win for the team came when they were 5.7 seconds in the finals in Kennewick to tie for the average win with world champions Kaleb Driggers and Junior Nogueira for $4,640 a man.

“I’m trying to make the Finals and win the world,” he said in an interview in April 2025. “I don’t think I could ask for anyone better [than Smith as a partner].”
