Florida natives Steve Munz and Reagan Overstreet roped their way to the Riata #9.5 Junior Championships title Sept. 26 at the Lazy E Arena, splitting $21,900 after a clutch short-round run.

The team doesn’t practice together much and hasn’t put their money up together at all before Sept. 26, but that didn’t show in the Lazy E Arena. Munz and Overstreet made a smart 9.61-second run the short round to take the win, ending with an average time of 33.62 second on four head.

Their toughest test came on the second steer.

“As soon as we came tight and went left, he started running up the rope,” said Munz, 57, of Oxford, Florida. “Reagan had to chase him down and he held his dally, and the rope ran. We slowed up at the end, that put us against the wall. He held his dally and got a wrap. We were a little long on the time, but we were good.”

“He was just strong and I kind of fumbled my dally,” added Overstreet, 16, of Kenansville, Florida.

Then to the short round, where the team came back in the fourth high callback position. Munz, the veteran of the team, had one goal in mind: spin the steer so his junior partner could get him heeled at a chance for big money.

“It was business as usual,” Munz said. “Not being the junior, I just wanted to catch for the junior and make his dreams come true.”

The Riata #9.5 Junior Championships requires one partner to be 16 years old or younger as of Sept. 25, 2025. That junior contestant must also ride a nominated Riata horse.

For Munz, horsepower came in the form of his 8-year-old gelding Bar W Roaney 1618, “Biscuit”, his go-to mount in the #12.5 and down. His proxy horse, FiveM Metallic Playboy, has been with the trainers for the week of the Riata Championships.

“He’s been a go-to horse for the #12.5s down,” Munz said. “One of my trainers was riding my proxy horse, so I rode Biscuit instead of my Riata.”

Overstreet relied on Haid Yer Creyzie, a 4-year-old stallion raised by his grandmother. The Riata was the horse’s first jackpot appearance.

“This is his first jackpot I rode him at,” Overstreet said. “He was pretty good.”

After the $21,900 payday, the plan for the team includes more of the same.

“We are headed to the Legends Finals, World Cup Finals, and World Series of Team Roping Finale,” Munz said.
