Go Green! Tanner Green Prepares to Double Dip at Days of ’47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo
Tanner Green is an all-around contender in his own right as he prepares to compete at the WCRA Days of ’47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo in both the team roping heading and the calf roping.

Tanner Green, who turned 23 on July 20, is double dipping in Pro Rodeo and WCRA Rodeo earnings as he is sitting at slack in Nampa, Idaho, he is preparing to compete in the calf roping and team roping at the WCRA’s third Major in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The cowboy from Cotulla, Texas, is known to be an all-around hand after winning the Resistol Rookie All-Around Title in 2018. He is entered in the calf roping and the team roping during the events the second performance of the semi-finals on July 21, 2021, with hopes of advancing in both events to the Gold Medal Round on Saturday, July 24.

“I’ve done multiple [events] ever since I started rodeoing,” Green said. “I’m just used to it. It doesn’t really bother me. I try to focus on one event at a time. I’m just going to go try and win the perf and hope to get back to Saturday.”

Green nominated the Red Bluff (California) Round Up, where he and his Pro Rodeo partner Clay Futrell, the 2020 Resistol Rookie Heeler of the Year, won the rodeo, and placed in a round of the calf roping, earnings Green the All-Around title, worth $9,234 in earnings.

“I got a bunch of point there. I didn’t nominate anything after that,” Green admitted. “I mainly try to nominate the two to three headers because you can get more points and not nominate as many.”

Green didn’t plan on entering the team roping because his Pro Rodeo partner Clay Futrell, the 2020 Resistol Rookie Heeler of the Year, didn’t get into the WCRA event.

“I don’t think Clay nominated anything. It slipped my mind, but when I nominated Red Bluff, I didn’t even think about asking him if he wanted to nominate,” Green said. “I think it just slipped his mind and then he wanted to nominate some stuff, but it was too late.”

That’s when Will Woodfin sent Green the coveted text message asking if he would head for him.

“I’ve never headed for Will before,” Green said. “I think we’re going to try and see how the perf goes. If it’s tough, then we try to be tough. If it’s easy we will just go make a good run and hopefully make it back.”

With his head horse coming up sore, Green will be heading the 2020 Resistol Rookie Header of the Year Tanner Tomlinson’s head horse Ivy.

“I’ll ride his horse that night and hopefully we both can advance, and I can ride her Saturday, too,” Green said. “Tanner and I used to high school rodeo together, so I rode her some back then and then I rode her the other day at Ogden (Utah) on the second [steer]. The thing I like most about Tanner’s mare is that she scores and she’s real flat. She runs, but she doesn’t run rough. She runs smooth and easy. She’s easy to reach on.”

Where Green feels like he shines the most is in the calf roping. Especially when he’s roping on his 15-year-old mare Maggie.

“I bought her from Mark Atkinson. She scores pretty good. She has a lot of run and she’s real flat. She’s just easy. That’s my favorite thing about her. She’s real forgiving.”
