Tomlinson Takes a $787.68 Lead in the Resistol Rookie Race with Two Weeks Left in 2020 ProRodeo Season
Tanner Tomlinson moves into the No.1 position of the Resistol Rookie heading standings with two weeks left in the 2020 ProRodeo regular season.

Tanner Tomlinson has officially slid past Brit Smith in the PRCA Resistol Rookie heading standings with a $787.68 lead after placing third at the Magic Valley Stampede in Filer, Idaho, with a 4.0-second run, worth $3,032 a man, and placing fourth at the Cattleman’s Days Inc. in Gunnison, Colorado, with a 4.7-second run, worth $1,931 a man.

Tomlinson, 20, of Angleton, Texas, now has $19,718.25 in season earnings with four rodeos left in the 2020 season, moving ahead of Broken Bow, Oklahoma’s Smith, 19, with $18,930.57.

“I kind of like that it’s neck and neck,” Tomlinson said. “It gives me some momentum and something to try and shoot for instead of just being so far ahead or behind. I’m just trying to finish strong this week. I think we have three left this week and then Stephenville (Texas) next week. I’m hoping to win enough to get in the top 30.”

Tomlinson’s bald-faced sorrel mare, Ivy, has helped him do-battle all season long, but the scoring has been a struggle until the last few weeks of rodeo.

“She’s (Ivy) been good all year,” Tomlinson said. “I just started scoring a lot better, using steers for what they’re worth and drawing good. If we draw a good one I try and go at him. I got some momentum going—finally started catching. Brady and I finally started clicking together and it’s just been working out.”

Tomlinson has his eyes on the final stretch of the 2020 ProRodeo season with hopes of drawing a good steer at the last four rodeos and using them to his advantage.

“Hopefully we just keep catching and do what we’ve been doing the last couple weeks,” Tomlinson said.
