Winning Weekend: Summers, Long Get Wins at Weatherford and Woodward
Clint Summers and Jake Long started their 2023 summer run with a big weekend, winning both Weatherford and Woodward.

It was a $7,047 week for Clint Summers and Jake Long after winning both the 2023 Parker County Sheriff’s Posse Frontier Days and PRCA Rodeo and Woodward Elks Rodeo over the June 7-10 week.

The wins in Weatherford, Texas, and Woodward, Oklahoma, came as the first for the new partnership of Summers and Long, who cracked out together for the first time in May at Guymon.

“I’m super excited,” said Summers, a two-time NFR qualifier and one of few NFR switchenders. “To win those two rodeos was a big deal to me. I feel like we should have won more, but I also don’t think you can be greedy. I’m thankful for what we won, and I feel like it’s a good start to the summer.”

Summers, 31, from Lake City, Florida, now has $12,442 won on the year, and Long, 39, of Coffeyville, Kansas, has $28,915. Long’s weekend winnings bumped him to No. 15 in the world standings.

“We started off great and we had some bobbles at the end the week, but when you can get two wins at two of the bigger rodeos of the week, it dang sure adds up to a lot still,” Long, a 12-time NFR qualifier, said. “I think we won almost $7,100, so it was a much-needed hit. It gives us some momentum going into Reno, and, hopefully, keeping it going would be ideal.”

Weatherford

Summers and Long first went to Weatherford, where they were last out in the slack Tuesday, June 6. Summers wanted to make as a good of a run as they could to get the ball rolling on the week.

“Weatherford always gets fast, especially at the end,” Summers said. “I honestly just wanted to try to make a good run. It was our first rodeo of the week, and I just wanted to kind of win something over there.”

True to Weatherford’s nature, Summers and Long were fast. They were 4.6 to both win $3,412. But neither Summers or Long thought that would stick in the No. 1 spot all week.

“The steers were pretty dang stout in the slack,” Long said. “Clint did a great job; he got a really good start, and it seemed like he threw his whole rope. I got him heeled just kind of okay—nothing special. We got a good finish, and I thought we made a really good run on a strong steer. I didn’t necessarily think it would win first, but the steers stayed pretty stout, and it kind of went our way.”

Woodward

Summers and Long made the 300-mile trip to Woodward to rope in the performance Wednesday, June 7, where they drew the perfect steer to win on. They made a 4.3-second run to win $3,635 each.

“We drew a really, really good one at Woodward,” Long, who was riding Roger, said. “I mean, we drew the best steer on the herd by far, and we made a good run. Again, he [Summers] drilled the barrier, stuck him good and then I got that one heeled pretty good. It was just a good run on a really good steer, and so I had a little more faith in that one on having a chance to win first.”

While they drew the right steer, Summers notes that the steers at Woodward can be more difficult to gauge.

“It seems like, at Woodward, the steers each year are a little bit fresher,” Summers, who was riding the 2023 Head Horse of the BFI, Mr Joes Shadow Bar, explained. “Weatherford, we rope some Mexicans every year that are really good that you can go at that have been rodeoed on a little bit. But Woodward seems like every year some of them run while some of them are a little bit better. They’re just fresh enough you don’t really know them, so you just kind of have to just go by whatever happens, you have to react.”

Game of Catch-Up

For Summers, he’s playing a game of catch-up to get into the Top 15. After sitting out much of the winter except for the main building rodeos after he and his wife Brittany had their first child—a boy, Claxton—Jan. 25, he has some ground to make up in the world standings race.

“I haven’t been to many,” Summers said. “Which is still fine because there’s so many rodeos left that pay so much money that I don’t feel in a bad spot whatsoever; I really don’t. I know, if you look at the standings right now it doesn’t look great, but also, I got a pile of rodeos left and there’s so many good rodeos to go to, I feel like if me and Jake just go make our runs, I have plenty of time. I have plenty of rodeos to get there.”

And while Summers may be playing catch-up in the standings, he’s confident he has the right partner to make up some ground with.

“I’m super excited,” Summers said. “Jake’s a great guy and he heels awesome. I think our styles, together, go pretty well; he likes to throw fast, and I like riding good horses that have a lot of run. I feel like if I can turn him a lot of steers and set them up for him, he’s going to catch all that I turn for him.”
