World Series Roper Scott Lund’s Whiz It Shine

Horse trainer, team roper and family man Scott Lund may in fact have it all figured out, at least when it comes to team roping and horses.

“Happy wife, happy life,” explained the Lynchburg, Tenn., cowboy who raised and trained one of the AQHA’s top team roping horses. He knows who really runs the show when it comes to the uber-talented, 8-year-old gelding Whiz It Shine—Dorie Lund.

“He is my wife’s horse,” Scott explained. “She deserves the very best and she takes priority when deciding who will ride him.”

A 2006 sorrel gelding, Whiz It Shine is by Who Whiz It out of Docs Shining Spark by Shining Spark.

“I’m a big believer in the dam side,” said Lund, who still owns Docs Shining Spark, and has several others out of the same mare.

“Whiz” was the 2014 Reserve AQHA World Champion Amateur Heel Horse and finished fifth in the nation heading.

“As far as team roping, if you catch on him, you’re going to be good,” Lund explained.

Whiz was also the 2014 OKC Redbud Spectacular High Point Roping Horse. But it’s not his awards that make him the most special horse the Lunds have probably ever owned. Their 12-year-old daughter, Jordan, can often be found riding him down to the creek by their house where she can do flips from his back into the water.

“He’ll just kind of look back at her, but he doesn’t move a muscle,” Lund laughed. “As far as the roping end of it. We just try and keep him legged up. We don’t run too many on him; he just doesn’t need it. I’ve roped both ends on him without a bridle. I know he’s ours and all, but the Lord sure sent us a special one.”

World Series Showing
Scott Lund was heeling on Whiz It Shine at the 2014 WSTR Finale in the #12 division. Dorie Lund also roped on him in Vegas, heading in both the #10 and #11 divisions. While Jordan’s busy athletic schedule has limited their team roping to some degree the Lunds still try and make the big ones. Jordan also competes on Whiz at her local 4-H shows.

Behind The Horse
When someone comes to me wanting one like him—the best answer I can come up with—I’d say the horse has to have what I call the “X” factor. Whiz just naturally wants to get on his butt and stay there. He never gets on his front end. Everyone thinks I did it, but I didn’t, I just showed what he’s already got. You have to start with a good product.”
