Clayton Hass Leads Field of Ironmen After Round 1 of 2024 Cinch Timed Event Championship

Clayton Hass picked up $3,000 for his Round 1 CTEC win.

Four-time National Finals Rodeo steer wrestler Clayton Hass is in his 13th appearance at the Cinch Timed Event Championship, and the Weatherford, Texas cowboy is wasting no time jumping into the driver’s seat at the 40th anniversary of the Lazy E event.

Hass had won $81,500 in his career at the Cinch Timed Event Championship, but his time of 55.7 seconds in Round 1 added another $3,000 to that total with 20 head left to go.

“I feel like the mentality of just coming here multiple times like I have is just don’t get caught up in the end picture,” Hass said. “Just do your job, you know, and it just, it don’t matter if you’ve got one that runs. Go be 10 in the heading and then it all add up at the end.”

Hass is 30th in the PRCA world standings in the bull dogging, with $11,425 won so far in the 2024 season. But he’s been squeaking in a bit of time team roping at home, too.

“My boy is starting to rope,” Hass, 40, said. “So now I get to rope with him in the house so I’m roping probably a little bit more than normally, but I mean, it’s still not a lot. I’m on some great horses, and that made it all feel pretty good tonight.”

Hass is riding a switchender in both the heading and heeling from trainer Slick Robison, as well as Shad Mayfield’s calf horse. Hass is on his own horse in the bull dogging with Tyler Pearson hazing, and Robbie Ritchie’s tripping horse Hollywood.

“I went and tripped two yesterday,” Hass said of his only steer roping practice this year. “I went and rode Hollywood and tied two down. And he was just like he always is. And it felt great. It felt like I didn’t need no reason to beat a dead horse.”

Round 2 of the Cinch Timed Event Championship begins March 1 at 12 p.m., followed by Round 2 of the JR Ironman at 5 p.m. and Round 3 at 7 p.m. The whole event streams for free on Roping.com.

This marks the second time the Cinch Timed Event Championship will use an elimination-style format, culling the bottom five competitors after the first two rounds, the bottom five after Rounds 3 and 4 and bringing only the top 15 back to the March 2 Championship Round.
