The Ariat WSTR Finale is almost here, and with the recent EHV-1 concerns, a lot of ropers are asking the same three questions. To help keep everyone informed and confident in their plans, the WSTR cleared up how EHV protocols work, what happens if your partner stays home, and what you’ll see when you arrive at the South Point.
Use this guide to understand the protocols, avoid panic and stay entered.
Note: Because staff members are traveling to Las Vegas this week, the best way to contact World Series is through email info@wstroping.com.
1. What Happens If A Horse Tests Positive For EHV-1 At the South Point?
The entire South Point will NOT be locked down.
If a positive case appears:
– The horse will be handled case by case, not as a mass shutdown.
– That horse will be immediately isolated and moved to a quarantine zone.
– The owner and veterinarians will decide the safest next steps.
– South Point staff will notify horses stalled directly beside the affected horse.
Important facts:
– South Point has always had a quarantine area.
– More than 100 horses per year go through it for basic sickness, not EHV-1.
– Mild symptoms like runny nose and watery eyes are common and not immediate signs of EHV-1.
– This year, quarantine capacity has increased to four separate areas.
If your horse looks off:
– Take them to the onsite vets.
– Let the professionals check them.
2. What You’ll See at the South Point: Disinfection and Safety Protocols
South Point had nearly three full weeks between events to disinfect the entire venue.
You’ll see safety crews:
– Using backpack sprayers and pump sprayers.
– Applying disinfectant that kills viruses and harmful bacteria.
– Treating arenas, alleyways, tie-up areas, and high-traffic zones.
How ropers can help:
– Do not tie horses in the warm-up areas.
– Take them back to stalls if you’re not on their backs.
– Reduce nose-to-nose contact.
3. What If Your Partner Draws Out Before the Finale?
WSTR will help you find a partner.
– Staff will work to match you with another roper on-site.
– They expect many calls and emails, but will do everything possible to keep you entered.
Quick Recap:
– No full lockdown at the South Point if a horse tests positive.
– Case-by-case handling is protocol.
– Four quarantine zones are available.
– Most mild symptoms are normal Vegas crud.
– South Point has been fully disinfected.
– You’ll see sprayers working regularly.
– Do not tie horses in congested areas.
– WSTR will help you find a new partner if yours stays home.
– You will not be stuck in Vegas for 14 to 21 days.
Final Message:
Travel safe and stay smart. The WSTR Finale is set to be an incredible week. The South Point team, vets and WSTR staff are doing everything possible to keep horses healthy and contestants competing.
