Smith on Brazile’s Heels Heading Into Day 2 of Timed Event

Clay Smith, who was the 2014 Cinch Timed Event Championship runner up, is just 10-seconds behind Trevor Brazile heading into the second day of Timed Event competition at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Okla.

Brazile’s aggregate time is 111.0 on 10 head, while Smith’s is 121.7, followed by Jess Tierney’s 132.4 and two-time Timed Event champ Kyle Lockett’s 133.3. Fellow two-time champ Paul David Tierney rounds out the top five with a 137.6. Newcomer Marcus Theriot is in the mix with 138.1.

“The bull dogging steers look pretty good,” Smith said. “The team roping steers are a little fresh on the head side, the calves are good. It’s really good livestock.”

Smith’s been particularly impressive in the bull dogging.

“I just try to get a good catch,” Smith said. “I’m riding Cash Myers horse, and she’s definitely really good. She’ll run right up there really good and let you get a good catch. My game plan on that is if they’re stronger, I’ve got to wait them out.”

Brazile, too, has been strong in the steer wrestling. He drew a steer that hadn’t been caught in the first round and made it look easy in 6.9 seconds in Round 2.

The Cinch Timed Event Championship had always paid fastest rounds overall, but in 2017 contestants voted that they’d like the Lazy E to pay out the top three in each round. So far, Brazile has won the first two rounds netting $6,000 with a 54.7-second Round 2, bettering his first-round by 1.6 seconds. Paul David Tierney is surging and won second in the second round with a 56.5-second round worth $2,000. Josh Peek was third with a close 56.7-second round worth $1,000.
