Pro Rodeo Circuit Update: Payne Takes Driver’s Seat in Texas Circuit Heeling
Coleby Payne takes over the Texas circuit heeling standings heading into the final weekend in PRCA Pro Rodeo's regular season.

Before the curtain closes on the 2019 PRCA Pro Rodeo regular season, the circuit team ropers are cashing in, in hopes of qualifying for their circuit finals.

Lipan, Texas’, Coleby Payne knocked Paul Eaves out of his No. 1 spot in the Texas circuit heeling standings after adding $4,131 to his season earnings putting him at $20,602.84.

“Honestly, just because it doesn’t count for anything it hasn’t been a huge goal or anything,” Payne said about making the Texas circuit finals. “Now I just have something to look forward to. We didn’t get the goal accomplished of making the Finals, now we have the circuit finals to look forward to. It’s somewhere to go that you can make money at. I’ve never made the Texas Circuit Finals but, it’s something to do anyways.”

Payne, who has roped with Marcus Theriot as regular partners, teamed up with Angleton, Texas’, Tanner Tomlinson to finish out the year in the Texas circuit.

“Tanner and I had planned to rope whenever I got home, and he’s done a good job for me,” Payne said. “We talked about roping next year. Neither one of us really had any plans yet. I think that’s what we’re going to do.”

They proved their dominant partnership after winning the 75th Annual Four States Fair & Rodeo in Texarkana, Texas with a 3.8-second run.

“Nelson Wyatt had that steer at Lovington, New Mexico, and they made a good run on him, but he was kind of stronger,” Payne said. “I watched the performance that night and the first steer was really good and then they all tried after that. Tanner Tomlinson was heading for me and it seemed like before the steer even had a chance to really get rolling, he had it on him. It made my job pretty easy. I’ve been 3 three times and they’ve all been at Pro Rodeos. Usually it feels pretty wild—you can tell there’s a lot of stuff going on. That run honestly felt like I got inside and heeled the steer and it was over. I think he made that run happen.”

The Texas ropers also placed in the average at the Pasadena (Texas) Livestock Show & Rodeo which helped them both moved up in the Texas circuit standings before heading into the final weekend of the PRCA Pro Rodeo regular season.

“These last two weeks are good rodeos, but you have to do really good to make it up the last two weeks,” Payne said. “I’ve got two left and then I’m done. I’m at Apache (Oklahoma) tonight and New Braunfels (Texas) tomorrow night.”

Payne is currently 34th in the PRCA world standings with $42,044.36, with hopes of earning enough money to qualify for the winter rodeos.
