From the West Coast to the Midwest, the ProRodeo trail was busy around the country this weekend.

Nine-time NFR header Derrick Begay and three-time NFR qualifier Colter Todd stole the show this weekend with their win at the Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo. The pair roped three muleys in 21.9 seconds to cash the biggest check of the weekend worth $3,333 a man. But the big check didn’t come without a little work.

“It felt pretty good on the first two rounds, and that third muley made us work at it,” said Begay, 39, of the Navajo Nation’s Seba Dalkai, Arizona. “Fresh muleys are always fun to rope.”

They roped their third and final steer Friday, May 5, in 8.5 seconds before Begay hustled back to Arizona. Why? Begay was set to help instruct at the Warriors and Rodeo Navajo Nation Team Roping Clinic in Window Rock May 6. WAR is a non-profit set to honor and support military, law enforcement, EMS and fire fighters. In its second year, the Warriors and Rodeo Navajo Nation Team Roping Clinic is an opportunity to not only improve attendees’ roping skills but also to remind them they’re not forgotten. It’s an opportunity Begay wouldn’t miss.

“Erich Rogers helps the Warriors of Rodeo, it’s a roping school they put on for veterans,” Begay said. “And I’m all for trying to help veterans.”
