Trey Yates won the L3 Senior Dally Team Roping–Heeling prelims at the 2026 AQHA World Championship Show on a Brazilian-bred gelding that had earned $395 in Qdata in his life.
He was second on a 10-year-old that already owns a world title.
On the other end of the arena, his father, J.D. Yates, was second and third in the Senior Heading prelims.
The Pueblo, Colo., father and son combined for four of the top eight placings in the two classes on Saturday, Nov. 7, in Oklahoma City, and $14,268. Between them, they have five rides in the Senior Heading and Senior Heeling finals.
Scooter Oaks
Trey Yates and Scooter Oaks marked a 233.5 to win the 72-horse heeling go by two points, worth $4,380. Three of the five judges placed them first, and the other two had them second.
The 2018 gelding was bred in Jumirim, Brazil, by Marcio Antonio de Carvalho. Rafael Correa Paoliello picked him out for Yates, and Yates’ godfather, Donald Tisdall of Castle Rock, Colo., owns him.
“Rafael told me that he thought it’d be a good horse for me,” Yates said.
Before Saturday, Scooter Oaks had $395 in lifetime earnings, according to QData. The prelim check paid more than 10 times that.
“He’s just really cool,” Yates said. “He’s just really calm, chill demeanor. He’s got that special feel that just certain horses have. It wouldn’t surprise me if you don’t see him at some rodeos here in the future. I think he’s legit.”
Tisdall will show Scooter Oaks himself in the Select Heeling on Friday, Nov. 13.
Two-time PRCA World Champion Chad Masters of Cedar Hill, Tenn., headed for Yates in the heeling, as he did for Junior Nogueira.
Peptos Hickory Cat
Peptos Hickory Cat marked a 231.5 for second and $3,504. Judge Mark DeFreece had him at 80.0, and two judges placed him first.
The 2016 Brother Jackson gelding, owned by Tony and Kimberly Clinco of Canon City, Colo., has been here before. Yates was second on him in the heeling at the 2021 American Rope Horse Futurity Association World Championship Futurity for $21,000 and won the 2021 L3 Junior Heeling world championship on him for $15,750.
“I won second at the futurity one year in Fort Worth on him, and won the junior heeling on him, maybe 2021.”
In the Senior Heeling, the gelding was second at the 2022 World Show, seventh in 2023 and fifth last year. He has $92,697 in lifetime earnings, and this week’s check would put him past $96,000.
“He just hangs out at our house,” Yates said. “I won fifth on him last year in the senior heeling.”
Next week, a family friend from Brazil, Gustavo Theodoro, will show Peptos Hickory Cat in the Amateur Heading and Heeling on a lease from the Clincos.
Gittin High
One horse carries both Yateses into the finals. J.D. Yates was third in the heading prelims on Gittin High, a 2014 Suns Highball gelding owned by John and Mary Phillips of Weatherford, Texas, with a 228.0 for $2,736. Trey Yates heeled on the same gelding to place ninth with a 225.0 and make the heeling finals.
The Phillipses show him, too. John Phillips heeled on him in the Level 2, and Mary Phillips is entered on him in the Amateur and Select Heading on Friday.
J.D. Yates
J.D. Yates was second in the heading prelims on DMC Rey Last Time, a 2019 Reynshine stallion owned by Kenneth Don Beshears of Burns, Tenn., with a 229.0 for $3,648. Only Junior Nogueira and Chica Dee Tinker scored higher.
Trey Yates said he had no doubts about how his father would do in his return to the World Show after shoulder surgery in June.
“He’s been roping quite a bit every day,” he said.
The finals
In the heading finals, J.D. Yates goes fourth on Gittin High and 19th on DMC Rey Last Time. In the heeling finals, Trey Yates goes fifth on Gittin High, 12th on Scooter Oaks and 19th on Peptos Hickory Cat.
