The JR. Ironman competition Round 2 saw the returning cowboy Wyatt Williams capitalize in a big way to earn the $750 round win with a combined time of 40.2 seconds on four runs: heeling, heading, tie-down roping and steer wrestling.

“I came two years ago and just had some bobbles,” Williams (19) said. “It wasn’t my year. I’ve grown a lot in the past two years and am excited to be back.”

The second round saw many competitors fall victim to a 60-second time for a no score or uncompleted run, but Williams managed to stay steady and consistent in all four events—something he accredited to a great team of horses and helpers.

“My dad owns all the horses that I’m riding here,” Williams said. “My head horse is a 7-year-old gelding named Socks, Blackjack is my 5-year-old calf horse, my heel horse is a 7-year-old we call Patron…and my bulldogging horse, Martini, we got her as a breakaway horse and turned her into a bulldogging horse along the way. She’s a great mare.”

Growing up idolizing giants like Trevor Brazile and Leo Camarillo, Williams has been grinding it out at the youth events, including the National Little Britches Rodeo Association and NLBFR, the finals that helped him qualify for 2025 JR. Ironman competition.

But now, Williams finds himself rubbing shoulders with the legends of today, like multi-time NFR header and 2024 PRCA reserve all-around champion, Coleman Proctor.

“Coleman’s a great guy,” Williams said. “He’s not just a great roper, he’s a really good person. He’s helpful and always has something good to say. I can’t say enough about having him on the team.”

“I try not to worry too much about the leaderboard. I just want to score good, ride good, go out and catch them. It’s just focusing on a couple things and doing your job.”

The cowboy in his freshman season at Clarendon College also opted for NFR talent Riley Duvall’s assist in the steer wrestling, plus has his father in the back pens and assisting with horse changes.

While Williams’ efforts helped him move up to No. 2 in the aggregate, he’s still trailing Round 2 reserve champion, James Mann. Mann followed up on his Round 1 victory with a 47.1, and is hanging on with a 90.9 on eight runs over Williams’ 101.1. On their heels, 2024 reserve JR. Ironman, Kreece Dearing’s posted a 112.5.

Four runs during Saturday, Feb. 29’s Round 3 stand between the 10 JR. Ironman contestants and the coveted $20,000 payout. Cinch Timed Event Championship action, and JR. Ironman competition can be viewed on Roping.com live or on-demand.
