Making History: An Inside Look at the December 2025 Issue
In this issue: all things Riata, team roping's greatest dynasties and more.
"Finer points" on the heeler's left hand starts on page 36.

Dear Roper,

The 2025 Riata Championships made history. We knew it would be big—but $5.5 million in payout and a $2 million jump from the year before? That was beyond expectations.

We dig into all of it in this issue—from the top stallions and sidepot strategy to the deeper infrastructure shifts happening through AQHA, Equine Network and the broader incentive ecosystem. This is the hard-news coverage Riata earned: 18 pages of results, context and analysis on the biggest stallion incentive event of the year. But while the payout numbers are loud, what sticks with me most is the idea behind it—that if we build it right, if we reward performance, ropers and breeders will show up. And they did.

That’s what this month’s issue is really about—how both the big shifts and the subtle ones shape the future of the sport.

Which brings me to something much smaller, but just as compelling: a new section we’re calling Finer Points. This month, it’s all about the left hand. Yes, the left hand. We’ve got tight photos of heelers leaving the box, holding their reins in ways you might miss at a glance—but not if you’re paying attention. They walk us through the small adjustments they make for timing, balance and horse control before they ever hit the corner. It’s granular. It’s a little nerdy. I absolutely love it.

Because this is what roping is—big money and fine margins, bold moves and tiny adjustments. Whether you’re watching a #9.5 short round or listening to a 9 header talk about how they manage tension in the box, it’s all part of the same language. One where detail matters.

So that’s what we’re aiming for in every issue: Depth. Detail. The full picture, from the arena floor to the breeding shed, from the left hand on the reins to the $100,000 incentive check.

Thanks for reading, and for being the kind of roper who cares enough to care about all of it.

See you at the South Point.
