CFR Arete Gun is a son of $9-million sire Gunnatrashya. While beginning his career as a reiner and National Reining Horse Association futurity prospect, he made a career change as a late 3-year-old to tie-down roping and team roping.

Gary Wells took over rope horse training as a 4-year-old and under his guidance, Cody McCartney and Arete won the 2021 AQHA L3 Junior Tie-Down Roping. Also in 2021, Steve Orth and Arete won top 5 in the AQHA Junior Heeling.

While continuing to excel at futurities with reserve titles at the American Rope Horse Futurity Association Redbud and Oil Can Classic, Dakota Kirkenschlager rode Arete to a reserve championship at both the 2022 Redbud Classic and 2022 Royal Crown Futurity.

Being such a talented, young stallion, Jared Crain, Buddy Wacaser and Jack Bogart—all partnered on CFR Arete Gun—decided not to breed Arete until he finished at the futurities.

“We’re excited to cross cow-bred mares on Arete to see them excel in the roping pen and cow horse arena, but we also know breeding to a reining mare is going to make a standout reiner,” Crain said. “He’s such a versatile stallion in the fact that he can go either way—reining or roping—and win.”
