Like many other elite ropers, Trey Johnson banked on mare power when looking for a good prospect, crossing his rodeo mare, TJS Voo Doo Fifteen, on the superbly bred MPH Spectacular Cat to produce his own stallion prospect, Docs Metallic Cat.

“I rodeoed on his mom and she was so tough,” Johnson said. “He reminds me a lot of her in how hard he tries.”

Just coming 6 in 2026, “Commander” is a veteran of the AQHA World Show and the futurity circuit, working both ends, and Johnson plans to display the stallion’s versatility at the breakaway futurities this year.

“He’s got a great mind and he wants to please,” Johnson said. “You just show him a few times and he’ll do his best.”

Johnson notes the stallion’s great disposition allows him to easily haul with mares and geldings and that he’s got both the speed and quickness to handily deliver a roper to his position.

For Johnson, showing Commander has allowed him to expand his outreach of Trey Johnson Ministries to the futurity world while widening his own knowledge and horsemanship.

“It’s been a fun journey and I’ve learned a lot with him,” he laughed. “It’s been good for the horse and the rider.”
