The official ranch of the World Series of Team Roping, Las Tunas Cattle Co. was also the most recent winner of the AQHA’s International Best Remuda award.
“We have 30-35 mares and numerous stallions on our ranch at any given time,” said ranch owner Miguel Guerrero-Elias. “We are also purchasing colts and foals to continue growing and refining our program.”
Of course, no top rope horse producer is complete without a Metallic Cat line, and the ranch offers Metallic Play, out of a Playgun daughter. Another young stallion recently added is Wagon Team, with a top side going to Tanquery Gin and Peppy San Badger, out of a Bueno Chex granddaughter.
Las Tunas also stands San Tomas Doc, by Wimp Olena out of a Smart Little Lena/Goldseeker Bars mare, and LobosWindWalker, by a Hancock-bred stallion out of a Peppy San Badger granddaughter. Additionally, they stand a blue roan stud named Four J Valentine Bar out of a Wilywood-bred mare.
Along with their own mares, Las Tunas covers up to 60 mares per year for outside customers and also offers frozen semen from their stallions that can be shipped to local clinics and breeding facilities in the United States.
Las Tunas hopes with its WSTR partnership to showcase its program of crossing big, stout, beautiful foundation-bred horses with today’s top cutting- and cow-bred horses. The cattle company was founded decades ago in Chihuahua, Mexico, and has been owned since 2017 by the Guerrero family. A breeding to a Las Tunas stud means you get proven winners on registration papers plus the looks, demeanor and cow sense every roper needs.
“All of our colts are started right here,” Guerrero-Elias said. “Before we ever take them into the roping pen, they spend six to eight months on the ranch being used every day by our cowboys.”
