The 5-year-old APHA mare Big Time Movie Star rose to the top of QData’s all-time earning rope horse mare list after the American Rope Horse Futurity Association’s Scottsdale, Arizona, Sun Circuit March 5, with $110,231 in earnings.
Shown by Miles Baker, Trevor Brazile and Treston Brazile and owned by the Relentless Remuda and Solo Select, Big Time Movie Star is by Shady Lil Starlight out of the A Master Hobby by A Master Plan.
“This mare is gritty,” Baker, who won $24,872 on the mare on both ends in Scottsdale. “One thing you can’t train in horses is heart and she has that. She is super physical and does everything with a lot of expression. She is just pretty to watch.”
Ty Smith—now CEO of Solo Select—found the mare as a yearling, and sent her Austin Johnson to start as a cutter. Baker bought her from Smith not long after, and she’s been in the Remuda training program ever since. Baker kept her on his family’s ranch in Oklahoma until late in her 3-year-old year, when she headed to Decatur to finish her rope-horse training.
She won the heading with Brazile at the Badlands Bits & Spurs Futurity in August 2022, and then she went on to place fourth in the Open heeling at the ARHFA World Championships in Fort Worth with Brazile and third in the 3/4-year-old incentive. ‘Queen’ also picked up the APHA World Title in the Junior and Open Heeling.
While still actively competing, Queen is also one of the flagship mares at Select Genes, where her embryos are available to the public to cross on any approved stallion.
“Queen has everything we look for in a mare,” Select Genes’ owner (and Queen’s co-owner) Melanie Smith said. “Her temperament and trainability have always been her strongest attributes. But her size and ability are what make her special as a broodmare. Plus, she is one of the prettiest horses any of us have ever had. That is always an added bonus in the breeding barn.” TRJ
