In 1986, Leo “The Lion” Camarillo entered the Timed Event Championship after winning the inaugural event the year before. Even at that time, Camarillo was seen as not only a dominant force in the team roping, but an innovator for that event, as well. So, when he set the 3.31-second steer wrestling record (which stands to this day), it raised some eyebrows. He recently told Spin To Win Rodeo editor Kendra Santos, “In my family, we were ropers first and ropers last. But we took a lot of pride in gritting our teeth and bulldogging, too, not just to showcase ourselves but also our horsemanship, technique and try. For me to go back to bulldogging country and set a record that still stands is something I’ll go to my grave pretty proud of.” By the way, Camarillo also won the CTEC 1989.
