That’s the Ariat World Series of Team Roping Finale, and it takes Las Vegas, a week and a half and thousands of teams to get there. The Riata paid $5.5 million last September in five days at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma.

Second-richest roping on the planet.

But the money isn’t the interesting part. Every rich roping pays ropers. The Riata pays horses.

This is a $120 million-per-year roping industry, and by payout it’s one of the richest disciplines in Western performance. Yet for 40 years, almost none of that money showed up anywhere a breeder, seller or owner could point to it.

Historically, the money followed the rider. The Riata was built to make it follow the horse.

Four years in, 2026 is the biggest version of that idea yet. Six Riata Championships at $200,000 added apiece. Three $50,000 guaranteed age incentives. Five new National Rope Horse Rewards Championships—each carrying a $20,000 Riata bonus, each built so every check written gets attached to a registered horse. Roughly $1.5 million sitting on the table before a single roper pays in.

Why the Riata Matters

In horse racing, every purse dollar becomes part of a permanent record. In cutting and reining, earnings fill databases, sale catalogs and breeding decisions. A buyer walks into the sale ring already knowing what a pedigree has produced.

Team roping never had that. The money was always there, more of it than almost anybody else in the horse business is playing for, and it went home in a roper’s pocket and stayed there.

The people it cost most were the ones producing the horses. A stallion could sire a decade of winners without a single earnings figure ever attaching to his record. A mare could produce a horse that won six figures and get nothing for it in her produce record. Buyers had to take a breeder’s word for it, and breeders had to take a roper’s.

Nobody was lying. There was just nothing to look up.

The sale rings are already showing it.

At the Old West sale in Heber City, Utah, in June, 17 Riata-enrolled prospects brought $4,069,000, an average of nearly $240,000 a head. These weren’t finished horses with rodeo résumés behind them. They were prospects—bred and raised for team roping—bringing cutting-horse money because buyers could see what the program behind them pays.

Riata Championship and side-pot earnings by themselves accounted for $6 million in documented 2025 earnings. Team roping cleared $20 million at AQHA’s QData last year. Riata’s target for 2026 is $30 million.

Payouts, Incentives & Formats

Riata Pro Futurity (5 & Under)

• $1,000 per roper. Five-steer aggregate, progressive after one. 80% payback.
• Regular barrier, 10-second barrier penalty. Riata horses only, no proxy horses.
• Enter twice heading, twice heeling. Horses limited to two head runs and two heel runs. Up and back allowed, no duplicate teams.

Riata Championships (#14.5 Through #8.5)

• $1,000 per roper through Sept. 18, $1,200 after. Four-steer aggregate, progressive after one. 80% payback, World Series barrier.
• Must be 21 or older, except in the #14.5, which has no age restriction.
• Heeler caps: #6.5 in the #10.5, #5.5 in the #9.5, #4.5 in the #8.5.
• Teams need at least one nominated Riata horse. The other end can be a proxy or helper horse.
• #14.5, #12.5 and #10.5: enter up to three times, provided at least one entry is in the incentive. #9.5 and #8.5: limited to three entries. No duplicate teams anywhere.
• Of the payout, 80% goes to the ropers, 10% to the stallion owner and 10% to whoever first nominated the eligible foal.

National Rope Horse Rewards Championships (WSTR Super Qualifiers)

• $500 per roper through Sept. 22, $560 onsite. Four-steer aggregate, progressive after one. 80% payback.
• Enter twice. Pick or draw, with a $40 draw-in fee.
• $20,000 Riata bonus in each: $6,000/$6,000 to the top Riata head and heel horse, $4,000/$4,000 to second.
• Every horse placing in the aggregate qualifies for the Rope Horse Rewards Finals in Las Vegas. Checks earned also qualify contestants for a 2026 Ariat WSTR Finale discount, but you have to enter the Finale by Oct. 15.
• Nominated Riata horses can enter without enrolling in Rope Horse Rewards, but they have to be enrolled before their division starts to be eligible for the Vegas finals.

The $100,000 Question: Showcase Horse Sale Incentive

The biggest number attached to a single horse at any team roping in the country. How it works, per Riata’s rules: the full $100,000 goes to the highest-earning Riata Showcase sale horse at the 2026 Championships. It doesn’t get split by division or carved into head and heel. One horse takes all of it.

That rewards versatility and volume. A horse that can go twice in a Championship, once in an age incentive and again in a Rope Horse Rewards Championship gets four shots at the leaderboard in a single day. Great horses that only fit one division get one.

It also puts real weight behind the tracking. To win it, a horse has to be counted. That’s not a coincidence.
