Andy Holcomb leads Clyde Bolejack by $3,394 in the Old West Intermediate Trailer Race heading into the Old West World Championships, which open Sunday in Amarillo, Texas, but only seven of his 13 horses are entered in the Intermediate, the only division whose money counts toward the trailer.

Holcomb also ranks third on both the 2026 Old West money list, with $164,146, and the all-time ARHFA/Old West earnings list, with $638,669.90.

Holcomb has $94,942 in the race, presented by Superior Trailer, to Bolejack’s $91,548. Cade Rice ($53,480), Britt Williams ($43,910) and Les Oswald ($31,463) round out the top five.

The race resolves at the Old West World Championships, Oct. 11-17 at the Amarillo Tri-State Fairgrounds in Amarillo, Texas — the fifth and final Old West event of the season.

Who the contenders are riding

The five trailer race leaders have 56 horses entered in Amarillo among them, according to Old West confirmation lists generated Sept. 29. None is entered in the breakaway or Pro-Am Non Pro classes.

Only money won in the Intermediate counts toward the trailer race, and that is where the entry lists split. All 11 of Bolejack’s horses carry an Intermediate designation. Seven of Holcomb’s 13 do — all seven in the heeling. His six heading entries list no Intermediate subclass, so nothing they win can move his trailer race total. Holcomb defends a $3,394 lead on seven horses; Bolejack chases on 11.

Rice, $41,462 back in third, has the most Intermediate entries of the five at 16. Les Oswald has 12, all Intermediate, and Britt Williams has four.

Old West has paid $3,985,818 to competitors through four 2026 events — Scottsdale, Guthrie, Redbud and Heber City, according to the organization.

Amarillo adds $500,000 in guaranteed money: $200,000 to the World Championship payouts and $300,000 exclusively for Old West Sale Graduates. Old West calls 2026 its biggest year to date.

Confirmation lists generated Sept. 29 show 498 entries across eight classes, carried by 452 horses. Futurity Heeling is the largest class with 110 entries, followed by Futurity Heading (92), Pre-Futurity Heading (90) and Pre-Futurity Heeling (87). The Pro-Am Non Pro Heeling drew 47 and the Pro-Am Non Pro Heading 45. The breakaway classes are the smallest: 14 in the Pre-Futurity and 13 in the Futurity.

2026 earnings: Richard on top, $405 between second and third

Rhen Richard leads the 2026 Old West money list with $200,688, the only rider over $200,000. He holds a $36,137 margin over Jeremy Buhler ($164,551).

The fight for second is tighter. Holcomb sits $405 behind Buhler at $164,146. Bolejack ($153,093) and Trevor Brazile ($137,483) complete the top five.

Kollin VonAhn ($117,259), Billie Jack Saebens ($111,489), Shay Carroll ($109,752), Paul Eaves ($92,436) and Rice ($81,351) fill out the top 10. The top 25 riders have combined for $2,144,164 this season.

For several of them, 2026 is a career year by volume. Bolejack’s season accounts for about 40% of his $380,976.50 in combined ARHFA/Old West career earnings. Carroll (44%), VonAhn (43%) and Eaves (43%) have each earned more than two-fifths of their career totals this year.

Eight riders on the 2026 top 25 do not appear on the career top 25: Statton Wittwer ($66,548), Laura Mote ($59,197), Williams ($51,429), Braden Pirrung ($49,650), Reed Boos ($48,958), Luke Atchison ($47,585), Ace Flanagan ($42,373) and Bobby Simmons ($37,943).

Joseph Harrison leads the combined ARHFA/Old West career earnings list with $1,216,632.27, the only rider over $1 million and $352,715.17 ahead of Brazile ($863,917.10).

Holcomb ($638,669.90), Richard ($576,657.05) and Saebens ($562,819.10) round out the top five. Rice, Tate Kirchenschlager, Miles Baker, Dakota Kirchenschlager and Buhler complete the top 10. The career top 25 totals $10,319,381.84.

Harrison’s 2026 has been quieter by his standard. His $69,460 ranks 12th on the season list.

The sale and the 2027 pitch

The Old West Horse Sale, the final Old West sale of 2026, sells Friday, Oct. 16, at 6 p.m. Central at the fairgrounds. The catalog runs yearlings through 3-year-olds.

Old West is selling the sale as the entry point to its Sale Graduate program, which expands in 2027. Eligible Sale Graduates will be able to compete for Guaranteed Sale Graduate Side Pots in their 4-, 5- and 6-year-old years, in heading, heeling and breakaway, across Open, Intermediate and Limited divisions. Each division pays five places per discipline, per event.

Old West promotes the 2027 opportunity as more than $3 million. That figure is not guaranteed. The organization’s own fine print ties 2027 side pot payouts to the number of horses sold through the official Old West Horse Sale, with sale volume setting the final structure and totals.

Eligible Sale Graduates can also compete at the Road to the Million in Heber City, Utah, where heading, heeling and breakaway competitors chase a $1,000,000 bonus.
