Orman and Crites Break Top 30 in PRCA World Standings with Deadwood Win
Jake Orman and Brye Crites each won $8,429 after winning Deadwood, South Dakota, and placing in Burwell, Nebraska.

Texas’ Jake Orman and Oklahoma’s Brye Crites moved into the top 30 of the PRCA world standings after adding $8,429 to each of their earnings, putting Orman 26th with $17,316.00 and Crites at 29th with $16,878.88.

They won the majority of their money after winning the two-header at the Deadwood (South Dakota) Days Of ’76 Rodeo. They roped two head in 10.2 seconds, worth $4,012 each, plus another $1,803 a man for splitting third in the first round with Dustin Egusquiza and Travis Graves with a 4.9-second run.

“It helped a lot,” said Crites, 26, who, when not roping, is an in vitro fertilization embryo researcher. “We were kind of indecisive whether we wanted to keep entering a bunch, and with this we have a chance so we’re entered everywhere now.”

They also tied Jake Cooper and Caleb Anderson for fourth on muleys at the (Burwell) Nebraska’s Big Rodeo with a 6.3-second run, worth $2,614 a man.

“I was really glad that we were at the bottom of slack,” Crites, who studied general ag at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, said. “Everyone thought we would treat them like Guymon (Oklahoma) and they’d be walking fresh and you have to leave them alone, and it wasn’t. They were running—they knew where the backend was. A guy really needed to haze them. We drew a really good cow and made a good run on him.”

Crites has been heeling on a 13-year-old chestnut gelding by Dual Spark, out of a High Brow Cat mare, that he calls Sneaky, owned by his wife Courtney (Small) Crites.

“She bought him probably six or seven years ago off a cutter,” Crites said. “He was a finished cutter—had points. We bought him and actually headed on him up until August and I started heeling on him. I’ve been heeling on him since then. She ran barrels on him, breakaway, you can do about anything you want on him.”

Sneaky

Crites, who headed for Buddy Hawkins II during his Resistol Rookie year in 2018, rode Sneaky as a backup head horse to Coleman Proctor‘s palomino Admiral, previously owned by Zac Small, Crites’ brother-in-law.

“He was my backup head horse whenever I was heading,” Crites, who grew up heeling, said. “He’s kind of a jack of all trades. The big, yellow horse I rode was Zac’s. He let me ride him so I just started heading. When he sold that horse to Coleman I went back to heeling. I didn’t have a head horse. It’s really hard to head without a good head horse. I had a heel horse or two so I just went back to heeling.”

Admiral

Orman and Crites plan to enter up as much as they can with hopes of moving into the top 15 in the PRCA world standings.

“The end goal is to make the Finals,” Crites said. “We’re going to just make the best runs that we can and see if it works out—be in a spot even if we don’t make the finals to get into the buildings next year.”
