Egusquiza and Koontz dominate during Cowboy Christmas

Dustin Egusquiza and Kory Koontz won $21,204 each as Cowboy Christmas came to an end, leading the Fourth-of-July earnings pack in the team roping.

"We were tired," Koontz said. "We were wore down. We had to get brakes on the truck. We had two blow outs and we ran a wheel off. He just got this new used trailer and it’s huge. He’s had it three weeks, it’s a 5 horse with a 15 foot short wall. It’s a side load with a big back tack, three rodeos we photo finished."

They won the Livingston (Montana) Roundup with a 4.0-second run, worth $6,874 each, the Black Hills Roundup in Belle Fourche, South Dakota with a 4.1-second run, worth $5,329 each, and the Oakley (Utah) Independence Day Rodeo with a 3.5-second run, worth $3,329 each.

"The morning we’re up at Oakley—I can’t even remember what day that was—I had to get up, drive to Caldwell, get a hub, drive back to Baker, they put the hub on, we left, got to Oakley at 8:20, and by 8:45 we were running our steer," Koontz said. "And that ended our deal. And we ended it with a bang."

"I made it a real point to focus on every steer like it was the last one I’m ever going to run," Koontz said. "I don’t know if that made all the difference in the world, but I felt like I put the energy forward and it paid off."

Egusquiza and Koontz have a total of $57.488.35 won in the PRCA World Standings putting Egusquiza fourth and Koontz third, respectively.
