Pro Rodeo Results Wrap-Up: Kirchenschlager and Hawkins Make Statement in Ellensburg
Tate Kirchenschlager and Buddy Hawkins II won the Ellensburg Rodeo, moving Kirchenschlager in serious NFR contention for what could be his first trip to the Thomas & Mack.

As 2019 PRCA rodeo’s regular season comes close to an end, cowboys are in the hunt to secure a spot in the top 15 of the PRCA world standings.

Yuma, Colorado’s, Tate Kirchenschlager, now in serious contention for what could be his first Wrangler NFR, launched from the bubble spot to 11th in the PRCA world standings with $71,079.79 in season earnings thanks to a win at the Ellensburg (Washington) Rodeo.

“I think a person needs to win $75,000,” Kirchenschlager said. “It’s just like everything else—depends on who does good where. Dustin Egusquiza—I know he’s back there a ways, but I don’t think a person can ever count him out. He’s liable to win three rodeos in a row and with $12,000. I think a person needs to go ahead and separate himself a little bit.”

Kirchenschlager and Columbus, Kansas’, Buddy Hawkins II (currently 32nd in the PRCA world standings) roped three head in 15.9 seconds, adding $4,950 to their earnings for the average alone.

“I needed to win,” Kirchenschlager said. “If I didn’t win there I wasn’t going to have a chance anymore—I needed to catch up. I’m not in, by no means. I need to win some more. That was probably bigger that winning San Antone this winter. That was a real big win.”

They won the first round with a 4.4-second run, worth $3,300 a man, and won the third round with a 5.0-second run, adding $1,167 to their earnings.

“I try not to think about it. I know I have a chance to make it, but I don’t want to overwhelm myself and start roping bad. Chad (Masters) told me to ‘just finish out the year. Don’t even look at the standings or how many rodeos you’ve got or what others got, just look at there’s three weeks left in the season—go for three more weeks and then see what it looks like.'”

Kirchenschlager is also sitting in the number-one spot of the Mountain States circuit with $14,085.94 won.
