Select Genes is the first-of-its-kind custom ICSI operation, providing access to world-class maternal genetics that allow breeders to design their dream cross.

Developed by Solo Select’s Melanie Smith, who helped reshape the industry with her online horse sales of proven performers and top-tier prospects, Select Genes creates a simple, economically feasible way to buy embryos out of proven mares.

“We’ve built our business on bringing the best in the industry together,” Smith said. “I’ve worked diligently to put together the best facilities, the best horses and the best customers. And now we’ve created Select Genes to showcase the genetics of premier mares from multiple disciplines to make a complicated process hassle-free. We’ll be adding new mares daily, and the ones we have lined up are what dreams are made of.”

At launch, Select Genes offers 25 mares on its website, where breeders can pay their deposit and begin the process immediately. Buyers have the option of selecting any stallion they like to cross on the mare with approval from the mare owner, and Select Genes handles the aspiration and embryo transfer process, as well as all registration paperwork.

“Select Genes’ program gives our ropers and cowboys the ability to keep one colt a year out of a great mare and a great stallion without ever owning any breeding stock,” said Denny Gentry, founding partner of Riata Buckle. “As prices rise on the horse market, this is the cheapest way for them to stay in the market without a big bank account. This is going to kick the growth of the Western performance industry into hyperdrive, with the potential to at least double the accessibility of great horses. Whereas breeders formerly had to accept whatever mare they had and try to improve on her with a stud, now they have access to the best of the best on both sides.”

Mares include NCHA Futurity Finalist Lizzys Chromed Kitty, iconic Playgun daughter ARC Ruby Playgun, First Down Dash daughter and producer of nearly $200,000 in earners Runawayheart and the No. 2 all-time leading roping mare Big Time Movie Star.
