What Sets Philipp Ranch Apart
The Philipps’ program was built on 30+ years of breeding, buying, and building rope horses that are as broke as they are useful. Many trace back to their original Dun Commander lines, with new blood added for athleticism and trainability. Whether bred and raised at the ranch or carefully selected as prospects, every horse in the sale has been ridden exclusively by the Philipp crew—no mystery miles, no guesswork.
“These horses have our fingerprints on them from the start,” John said. “Whether they’re headed to a number 4 roper or a rodeo cowboy, we want them to be sound, user-friendly and ready to go do a job.”
🔑 Horse Highlights
Lot 12: PR Blitzen | “Sancho” — Head Horse with Rodeo Potential
A 6-year-old gelding by Cash One Pepto out of Curtis Playgirl, “Sancho” was Shane’s personal pick. Big, strong, and built for longevity, he had done his time on the ranch and was just now showing what he could do in the arena.
“He does all the hard stuff easy,” Shane said. “He’s got the size to be a head horse, but rides like a little one—real good-footed, balanced and plenty of cow.”
Lot 10: Talking Up A Storm | “Alvin” — Proven Heel Horse with Cow Horse Cred
By Smooth Talkin Style, this bay gelding is quick-footed, cowy and easy to ride. John had ridden him on the ranch and in the arena for a year, and his versatility and style made him a standout.
“He takes everything on his butt and has a good stop,” John said. “My little boy’s not happy we’re selling him.”
He is eligible for major incentive programs including Royal Crown and Gold Buckle.
Lot 27: Cats Blu Suede Shoes | “Elvis” — Breakaway or Heel Horse Deluxe
Cats Blu Suede Shoes is a 4-year-old gelding by Once In A Blue Boon. Elvis was shown in the Snaffle Bit Futurity and had since been pen roped on by top-10 WPRA breakaway roper Aspen Miller. With strong bone, good feet and perfect breakaway horse size, Elvis checked all the boxes for versatility.
“He’s got the size to head on, but really he’s a Cadillac breakaway horse,” Shane said.
Lot 4: Draculas Cat | “Phoenix — Versatile Mare with Bonus ROI
One of the most exciting 3-year-old mares in the sale, this Curtis Dracula daughter was out of a Metallic Cat x Shiners Diamond Jill mare. Her maternal line included AQHA Superhorse Shiners Diamond Jill.
“This one’s bred to win, and she’s the kind you could build a program around,” John said.
Lot 39: The Ace Ashford Foundation Filly
One of the most heartfelt entries of the sale, this weanling filly by Clean N Shiney is being auctioned off with 100% of proceeds benefiting the Ace Ashford Foundation. She represented the Philipp family’s commitment to honoring their late friend and helping others in the process.
“This one’s not about the horse — it’s about giving back,” John said.

Visitors were welcome at the Philipp Ranch before sale day to try horses in person. The team encouraged potential buyers to call ahead, watch them go, and make sure they were bidding on a horse that fit their needs.
“We want people to feel good about what they’re buying,” John said. “We’ll show you nine if we need to — whatever it takes.”
💻 How to Bid Online
Not able to attend in person? No problem.
Online bidding was handled via CCI.live, one of the most secure and widely used bidding platforms in the livestock industry. Bidders could register, preview, and participate in real time from anywhere.
The preview and auction would both be livestreamed, making it easy to evaluate the horses and stay involved wherever you were.
🎯 Horses for Every Level
The Philipp brothers were honest about what each horse was — and who they were for.
“We’ve got horses we’d take to the BFI, and horses perfect for a number four roper at the World Series,” Shane said. “It’s not a one-type program. It’s a deep offering that fits all kinds of riders.”
While some sales were pricing out the everyday roper, the Philipp Ranch remained focused on value, versatility, and longevity.
“We want to build horses that last,” John said. “Good-minded, good-bodied, with a pattern that fits.”
