Slick By Design needs no introduction in the barrel racing arena as the top-earning stallion of all-time, with lifetime earnings of more than $643,000 and offspring nearing the $3 million mark in barrel racing earnings.
But in 2021, Slick By Design made his first major splash into the roping pen, with multiple offspring winning big across the sport’s major aged events.
Probably By Design—a 4-year-old under the guidance of J.D. Yates—won the Farnam AQHA World Championship in the Non-Pro Senior Heading with owner Phil Tearney aboard in November, after finishing fifth in the average and fourth in the 4-year-old Incentive at the Royal Crown Futurity.
“They’re really gentle, quiet and easy,” Yates said of the horse. “For a big horse, he can really use his butt. You very seldom find horses at that age that likes to do what they do.”
Freckled By Design, another 4-year-old gelding, won fourth in the main average and second in the 4-year-old incentive under Relentless Remuda’s Miles Baker at the Royal Crown.
“The Slick By Design colts I’ve ridden are so quiet and user-friendly,” Baker said. “They’re good-minded, trainable colts that the general public will really enjoy because they run so flat and they make catching easy. But their ability means they could excel at the highest levels, too.”
National Finals of Breakaway Roping qualifier Taylor Hanchey also won the first go of the 2021 Ruby Buckle Breakaway with the fastest time of the event, highlighting the Slick offspring’s versatility across the timed events.
Slick’s colts are eligible for $13 million worth of purses in barrel racing thanks to all of his incentive eligibilities, plus another $2.5 million in roping incentives in 2022.
