A young ranching family in California decided to start raising their own working horses, and discovered the progeny cross over really well into the roping pen.
“We’re not really show-horse people,” said Lacy Bourdet, who owns 24/7 Livestock with her husband, Wyatt. “We like rodeo, roping and barrel racing plus reined cow horse, cutting and versatile ranch horses. Wyatt started colts for people for a lot of years, which gave us an idea what we’re looking for in a good horse.”
Their program proudly stands Isaac Starlight (Stud fee: $1,500). They raised the 2014 stud—a grandson of Grays Starlight and Gay Bar King on top, out of mare going back to Colonel Freckles, Doc Bar, Smart Little Lena and Gun Smoke.
At last fall’s ARHFA World Championships, Jake Bourdet placed a full sister and three fillies by Isaac Starlight in the top 15 of the Intermediate Heeling. And in the 2023 ARHFA World Championships, Paul Eaves was the reserve champ in the 4-&-Under and placed ninth in the Open Heeling aboard Ryan Fowler’s Isaacs First Cody—and they also banked $16,800 in the 5-year-old incentive of last fall’s Riata #14.5.
Isaac’s progeny have done well at the Snaffle Bit Futurity, too. In fact, the 24/7 mares are rich in NRCHA talent and pack the blood of Stevie Rey Von, Woody Be Tuff and Metallic Cat, along with older lines like Smokums Prize, Highbrow Cat and Colonel Freckles.
The family also purchased the 2019 blaze-faced bay stallion Three Xs The Magic to cross on Isaac’s daughters, so his first foals will hit the ground this spring. “Tripp” is by WR This Cats Smart—the late, $18.7 million sire—and out of a Grays Starlight granddaughter.
At the 2023 ARHFA World Championships, Holcomb was the reserve champ in the 4-and-Under Heading on Tripp.
The Bourdet family, including kids Braydee and Emitt, rodeo on the horses they raise and train. A full sister to Isaac and a gelding out of one of their favorite mares helped Braydee become the 2023 national junior-high girl’s breakaway and all-around champ, and she has competed in reined cow horse events on Tripp.
