The Math on the Million: Where Old West Sale Graduates Stand Going Into Heading Pre-Futurity Short Round
Four Old West Sale graduates are alive in the Pre-Futurity Heading short round. Here's exactly how much ground each has to make up—and the breeding behind them.

Shes A Bossy Rebel and Andy Holcomb sit on top of the Pre-Futurity Heading at 678.76, and that’s the number that matters to a sale graduate—because that mare is not a sale grad, and she’s the one to beat.

To collect the Old West Sale’s $1 million bonus, a graduate has to win the roping outright—not lead its incentive group, win the whole thing. Four are still in position to do it.

Reys Version is the closest, 8.08 points back and fourth overall. Winners Fire is 9.97 back, Corona Makes Me Purr 10.96 back, and Woody To My Jessie 20.63 back.

The top three all sit inside an 11-point window of the lead—bridgeable ground in a single judged run if the leader makes a mistake. Woody To My Jessie would need the front of the field to come undone.

The ground to make up

  • Reys Version — 8.08 back. The best-positioned graduate and the leader of the sale-graduate group. Two non-graduates (Shes Foxie N Sweet, Fendiii) sit between her and the top, but both are within a point of him.
  • Winners Fire — 9.97 back. Just under 10 to find.
  • Corona Makes Me Purr — 10.96 back. Under 11.
  • Woody To My Jessie — 20.63 back. Needs help up top.

The riders and the pedigrees

The runs belong to a short list of hands, with Rhen Richard on two of the three live tickets.

  • Reys Version — Rhen Richard, for Spiked X Ranch. By Reys Smokin Dually out of Heavys Version; bred by Chad Richard.
  • Winners Fire — Rhen Richard, for A/C & Racing & Roping & Kaufusi. By Winners Version out of Radiant Fire; bred by A&C Racing And Roping.
  • Corona Makes Me Purr — Andy Holcomb, for Tres Amigos. By Cat Man Do out of Brooks Corona Gal; bred by Redgie Probst.
  • Woody To My Jessie — Kaleb Driggers, for Mike L Van Egdom. By Woody Be Tuff out of Metallic Jessie; bred by Redgie Probst.

The stallions behind the money

The four million-eligible head trace to four different stallions — no single sire stacked the group. The most accomplished of them at this roping is Woody Be Tuff, sire of Woody To My Jessie and the most-represented stallion across the entire Saturday finals with six head qualified on both ends. Winners Version, who sired Winners Fire, put two head in the Saturday finals; so did Cat Man Do, behind Corona Makes Me Purr. Reys Smokin Dually, sire of the group’s leader, Reys Version, had the one. It’s a fitting snapshot of how the sale graduates are bred — pulled from four distinct families rather than one dominant stallion, the same wide-open pedigree picture the breakaway pen showed and the team roping sire board did not.

The Helpers

The pressure is on Dakota Kirchenschlager behind Rhen Richard, while Shay Carroll will heel for Andy Holcomb and Kollin VonAhn will be behind Kaleb Driggers.

Breakaway?

One breakaway mare is technically still on the Road to the Million, but the math is brutal. Reyzin Royals — by Reyzin The Cash out of Queen Cisco, bred by Utah State University and ridden by Cheyanne Mccartney for Reyzin Royals Partnership — is the lone sale graduate in the Pre-Futurity Breakaway short round. The problem: she drew back first and sits dead last of the nine finalists at 423.34, a full 31.54 points behind leader Masterpiece Returns (454.88, Jackie Crawford) and more than 20 behind the next horse up. With one run left, she’d need a personal-best score and a near-total collapse from the eight head in front of her. She’s in the hunt on paper — and a long shot off it.
