Coleby Payne has added a major horse to his string going into the summer run: Kadabra King, the three-time Nutrena AQHA Heel Horse of the Year better known as Turbo.
A a 2010 dun gelding by Abrakadabracre, out of Quixote Jessie by Holidoc previously owned by two-time World Champion Patrick Smith, Turbo helped Wesley Thorp win the 2024 world title and carried Smith to the NFR aggregate title and record in 2022. Smith went off the road full time in 2025, and Turbo’s career was nowhere near ready to be done. So Payne stepped up and
Payne, 25, of Stephenville and his new partner, Jr. Dees, 27, of Orange, Texas, won the Livermore Rodeo in California with a 5.1-second run, earning $3,995 each. It was one of Payne’s first rodeo wins on Turbo since buying the horse earlier this year.
“If I’m doing something, I’m all the way in,” Payne, who’s fourth in the world with $74,336
won, said. “I want to give myself the best chance that I possibly can.”

Payne had been relying on his 16-year-old gelding, Cut Off My Spots by Spots Hot, for most of the past few seasons. While Coon is still sound, Payne said adding Turbo gives him more options for the summer.
“I rode Coon’s wheels off last year,” he said. “I think as tough as those two horses are, they’ll both last until they’re 20.”
Payne said Turbo and Coon have different styles—Turbo is more elevated and framed up—but he took time this spring to get fully comfortable on the new horse.
“I wasn’t afraid to run eight or 10 steers on him when I was practicing,” he said. “I wanted to know him like the back of my hand before I left for the summer.”

With both horses in the trailer, Payne plans to alternate based on the setup. He expects to ride Coon at larger setups like Cheyenne, and Turbo in most one-header formats.
“I’m going to try not to just torture one or the other,” he said. “I’ve done that before, and I didn’t want to keep doing that to Coon.”
