With a 3.8-second Round 9-winning run, Coleman Proctor put himself first in the PRCA’s projected world standings heading into the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo’s 10th and final round, setting up a potential split world title.

Meanwhile, Proctor moved ahead of tie-down roper Shad Mayfield in the PRCA’s all-around world standings with $326,648.45 on the year between the steer roping and the heading, setting the 39-year-old Pryor, Oklahoma native up to contend for two gold buckles in Round 10 of the 2024 NFR.

“The reality setting in that this is a dream come true is what we’ve been always been wanting,” Proctor said. “This is why we work so hard at it. Those moments like tonight when there’s doors opening up and your team’s great enough to step through there. So I’m not surprised, I’m just figuring this is part of the process because I know we’ve worked hard enough to put ourselves in this position, and I’m very grateful that we have an opportunity tomorrow night to do some really cool thing.”

If the rodeo were to end after Round 9 with the average as it currently stands, Proctor would be fourth in the average but the 2024 World Champion Header with $337,486.24, while his heeler, Logan Medlin would finish second in the world with $324,253.03. Wesley Thorp, the reigning world champion heeler, would finish first in the world on the heel side with $334,856.26, with his header, Tyler Wade, finishing second with $334,856.26.

“There’s been a lot of highs and lows in just the whole season, let alone this week,” Medlin said. “But to just think back to the all-night drives that you hadn’t won anything in two weeks, and we were driving all night to go wherever, and just to know that all that was worth it, to know that you weren’t just beating your head against a post, that it actually had some meaning to it and just all the effort that’s been put into it, not only by us, but the people that are with us all year. My family, Tiffany, his family don’t get to go the sacrifices they have to make for a summer for their dad to be gone and just to know, to have this opportunity to rope for something that means so much is amazing, but it wouldn’t have been possible without the people that were behind us.”

But of course, the rodeo does not end after Round 9. Tomorrow will be a one header, with Wade and Thorp unable to move into an average check. They’ll need to be gunning for the day money, while Proctor and Medlin will need to do their best to hold their place in the average and pick up some go-round checks, too.

We’ll run more scenarios and talk to more analysts to give you some insights into what to look for as we run the numbers.
