Top Money Earners: Wade, Thorp Kick off Northwest Run
Who raked in the most Aug. 15-20, 2023, as the Northwest run begins?

As we begin to say goodbye to August, we say hello to the Northwest run. From Idaho to Oregon to Montana, there’s big money to be won in that corner of the country, and these five teams wasted no time taking advantage of the Northwest run, raking in the most over the week of Aug. 15-20, 2023.

Tyler Wade & Wesley Thorp: $13,462.00

Tyler Wade and Wesley Thorp had a significant five-figure week that more than likely solidified the Finals for them. Wade now sits. No. 6 in the world standings with $102,703.20 won on the year, and Thorp is No. 3 on the heel side with $119,930.47.

“Honestly, I’ve never gotten to enjoy the Northwest run because I’ve always been on the bubble or somewhat on the bubble where I needed to make it or my partner needed to make it,” said five-time NFR qualifier Wade. “Kind of just being on cruise and just trying to win where we go, that’s for sure a better feeling. But I feel for those guys because I get it; I’ve always been on the bubble.”

Wade and Thorp started their roll in Caldwell, Idaho, where they won the first round with a 4.0. They were out of the second-round money with a 6.1, but their 10.1 on two head brought them back to Saturday’s championship round leading the average. They were 5.6 in the final round to finish third in the round and win the average with a 15.7 on three steers. In Canby, Oregon, they won the first round with a 4.4-second run and got a piece of the pie in the average with a 14.5 on two head. They wrapped up the week with a 6.3 in Moses Lake, Washington, to be in the money. Wade credits Thorp as being a big reason to winning so much.

“Wesley doesn’t hardly miss,” Wade explained. “If I turn them, he doesn’t miss very many and he goes at them fast. So, if I do my job, it feels like we’re going to win something and we’re going to win something pretty good for the most part.”

And despite being on a hot streak, 31-year-old Wade isn’t thinking twice about it.

“It’s such a marathon,” Wade said. “The days don’t matter, the weeks don’t matter, the months don’t matter and the years don’t matter. It’s just longevity over time and staying the course. I’m a decade into rodeo right now, and just staying the course and playing it through and staying grateful for all the opportunities is probably the biggest deal.”

Tanner Tomlinson & Patrick Smith: $10,837

Reigning NFR average champions Tanner Tomlinson and Patrick Smith had a killer Fourth run and appear to be off to a good fourth-quarter start as well. Tomlinson and Smith were on Wade and Thorp’s tails in Caldwell, finishing second in the average with a 15.9 on three head. In the rounds, they were 6.1 in the first, 5.0 for fifth in round two and 4.8 to win the final round.

They walked away third in the first round in Canby with a 4.9, and their 5.6-second run in Moses Lake finished them eighth for a decent check.

Tomlinson, 23, is currently No. 7 in the world with $101,276.00 won thus far. Two-time World Champ Smith, 43, is sixth on the heel side with the same amount won.

Derrick Begay & Colter Todd: $9,785.00

Derrick Begay and Colter Todd are undoubtedly a fan-favorite team, and they’ve been having an exciting year for a pair of “retired” pros. Over the week beginning the Northwest run, they accumulated $9,785 a man to put nine-time NFR header Begay at No. 11 in the world with $81,475.64 on the year and Todd, a three-time NFR qualifier, No. 7 with $96,642.84.

With a 4.7, they were second in the first round in Caldwell. In Canby, their 11.4 on two head won them fourth in the average. They were also the champs in Moses Lake with a 4.2-second run.

Shay Carroll & Max Kuttler: $9,710.00

Shay Carroll and Max Kuttler may come from the back of the pack, but make no mistake, don’t count them out. Carroll is a three-time NFR qualifier and currently sits in the top 50 with $37,555 won on the year.

Carroll, 32, and Kuttler, 31, brought home their biggest overall check of the week from Canby. They were second in the first round with a 4.7 and sixth in the second round with a 5.3. They took home the average win with a 10.0 on two head. In Caldwell, they were fourth in the first round with a 5.0-second run, and they finished seventh in Burley, Idaho, with a 5.1.

Wyatt Bray & Josh Patton: $7,568.00

Wyatt Bray may only be a ProRodeo rookie, but he and Josh Patton, 43, have made some significant hits this year, especially last week.

Bray and Patton made their presence known in Caldwell. They were fifth in the second round with a 5.0 and second in the final round with a 5.3. With a 16.7 on three head, they were fourth in the average. They also got a piece of the pie in Gooding, Idaho, with a 4.8-second run to finish ninth.
