There was no grand scheme when Jessica and Shane Boston bought the flashy black stallion, The Notorious B I G, from his breeder, Dixon Flowers Rope Horses, as a 2-year-old.
“I bought him because he was pretty,” Jessica Boston admitted with a laugh, noting they also liked his pedigree.
His sire, CD Lights, is a million-dollar producer in the National Cutting Horse Association and National Reined Cow Horse Association, and his dam, DT Sugar Chex Whiz aka “Sugar,” is an NFR qualifier and the 2019 AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year, campaigned by Billie Jack Saebens.
“We didn’t really know what we wanted to do but knew his looks were jaw-dropping and he is really good-minded,” Boston said. “So many ropers were showing interest. It seemed crazy to breed a 3-year-old, but it just went from there.”
Started by Tyson Benson, it seemed inevitable to send him to Saebens. With a short training window thanks to a full breeding book in his first year standing to the public, the team won thefirst AQHA show they entered and earned the American Rope Horse Futurity Association 4-Year-Old Heeling Reserve World Championship.
“As far as competing, he’ll continue in the rope horse futurities with Billie Jack, and then we’d love for him to rodeo on him later, like he did on Sugar. That would be really cool.”
Passing on an unflappable disposition as well as extreme athleticism, The Notorious B I G’s progeny are eligible for the Riata Buckle and Royal Crown.
