He’s only 5, but Famous has the run-and-cow mix on his papers that’s been so successful at recent roping futurities. 

He’s by all-time leading barrel-racing sire Dash Ta Fame, with progeny earnings topping $42 million. And he’s out of Shegetscash by the great Peptoboonsmal out of Corona Cash, a mare that earned more than $1.5 million on the racetrack. She’s by First Down Dash and out of a half-sibling to Corona Cartel. 

Cross 4 Performance Horses bought Famous out of the 2022 Solo Select Sale after reining trainer Dakin Allred had him in training.

“I’m always a little hesitant of these barrel colts being hot, but Famous has been kind and willing the whole time,” said Allred. “This horse has a great mind and feels like he will take the heat.”

The Kremers—Doug and Lacey—both come from families who have been breeding, raising and training horses for generations, including their grandfathers Bubba Echols and Butterfly Cowan. They operate Cross 4 along with their four kids.

Famous stands 15.2 hands, and the Kremers have been heading, breakaway roping and running barrels on him about two years. 

“We can see the smarts of Pepto in this horse,” Lacey said. “And out of our seven weanlings by him, there’s everything from black to roan to bay, and a line-back dun.”

The Kremer daughters are breakaway ropers, and Lacey thinks Famous babies will excel in that and the barrel pen as easily as they’ll dominate the roping.

“His feet are really good,” said Lacey. “We’ve kept him barefoot, and we ride him out here in this mountainous terrain. I feel like this is important stuff for our industry.”
