Raised by Arizona’s Gianna Hansen, Bet Hesa Shiner started in the cow horse with World’s Greatest Horseman Corey Cushing before transitioning to team roping with WGH Finalist Tyler Merrill.
In 2022, Merrill won the AzQHA Year-End Championship in junior heeling before passing the reins to five-time NFR heeler Ryan Motes.
“We call him ‘Ironman,’” Motes explained, “because he can do it all and he’s as strong as you could hope for. At the same time, he’s the kindest, most gentle horse in my barn. Your kids, your mom, anyone can ride him and have a great time. He’s easy, but he’s got the talent, too.”
On Bet Hesa Shiner, Motes placed on both ends at the 2023 AQHA World Show, and he placed in the top 20 at the 2024 ARHFA World Championship in the Open Heeling—the single most competitive feat in all of the rope horse industry. The same week, Bet Hesa Shiner made the finals in the Intermediate Heading at the ARHFA.
Throughout his futurity career, the big-boned, flashy red roan gelding consistently made the finals of the country’s largest shows on both ends.
