In the performance-horse world, athleticism and intelligence are critical to success, but jaw-dropping looks aren’t a liability. Hockenson Quarter Horses’ stallion CT Show Me Your Guns (“Joe”), the 2021 AQHA World Champion in Sr Heading that looks both grey and buckskin, carries three color genes–creme, grey and dun.
“There’s going to be a boom of them in the next couple of years,” said Reid Hockenson. “They’re big, strong with lots of run and really trainable, plus pretty.”
Hockensons bought Joe as a weanling at the Pitzer Ranch Sale from Terry and Mary Mailander to make him an AQHA World Champion. His dam had placed in the Jr Heading at the 2007 AQHA World Show, and his sire, Show Me A Song Joes, was the 2011 AQHA Sr. Heading World Champion.
Joe was a Superhorse contender multiple years after qualifying for the AQHA World Show in tie-down roping, heading, heeling, ranch riding, barrel racing and performance halter.
“Most of these smaller cow-bred mares need more foot, bone and size to them,” Hockenson said. “Joe adds all three, but then makes them prettier, too. We bought him hoping he would make our offspring a little bigger and stronger while keeping the quick feet and adding the looks. He’s done all of that and a shot of color doesn’t hurt anybody either.”
Joe’s offspring have earned more than 556 AQHA points and $93,253 and climbing. He’s also the all-time high-money producing stallion in the IQHA Ranch Horse Futurity, just one of the many incentives for which his progeny are eligible.
