The Hockensons had a vision of raising a winner when they crossed NCHA Hall-of-Famer Metallic Cat on their Bronze Champion AQHA Sr Heading mare, Bound To White Chex. She had more than 328.5 points in all three roping events, earned $20,189 and was an AQHA Performance Champion.
The result, HQ Helluva Cat, “was absolutely everything we hoped for,” Reid Hockenson noted of the 2016 palomino roan.
“His mama, Bound To White Chex, was an absolute rock star in roping events,” said Reid. “She only stood 14 hands and was still Top Three at the World Show against the best head horses. That mare was gritty and tough, and all her colts are the same way.”
HQ Helluva Cat made the Open Finals of the 2019 Snaffle Bit Futurity with Luke Jones before they started heeling and roping calves on him. An injury shortened his career just after he added an All-Around Ranch Horse Versatility Championship to his resume.
“His half-brother HQ Blondes Love Me, out of Bound To White Chex by CD Dyna Cee, is an AQHA World Champion in Jr Heeling, plus John Philipp just placed fourth on him in the Sr Heeling at the World Show in November,” Reid said.
And the stud’s half-sister was a reserve world champ in tie-down roping, as well, proving further the roping ability in this line of horses. Hockensons recently bred HQ Helluva Cat, a carrier of both the cream and roan genes, to some “really big-time rope horse mares,” while the oldest foals, just 2, are already being ridden and their trainers are impressed with their talent, trainability and grit.
