If you’ve been to a roping in the last 40 years, chances are you’ve seen the Double Dollar brand, representing the decades that Greg Kesler has been churning out finished rope horses geared specifically for low-numbered ropers.
“We’ve had horses at the NFR and everywhere in between, but our aim is to create nice, quiet, gentle, good-minded horses with plenty of run,” Kesler explained.
A full ranching operation with a feedlot, Double Dollar also produces most of the World Series ropings in Utah. Ranch work is a critical piece of their training program, which focuses on patience and going slow, and is bolstered by starting with carefully curated genetics.
Though the tragic loss of their son Quinn led to a partial dispersal of their herd, Double Dollar will continue to produce quality horses through their 30 chosen broodmares and three Riata-enrolled stallions, all with bloodlines tracing to their best horses.
DD Frosty Cowboy, aka Bull, is by Trace of Frost, the heart and soul of the Double Dollar program, one that carried Quinn, a then-junior in high school, to a reserve finish at the BFI. His dam is by the legendary Shining Spark.
Dark N Metallic is by Metallic Cat out of a Hot Spot mare while One Tuff Player is a Woody Be Tuff/Playgun cross.
“Dark just has an awesome disposition and is gorgeous, and Metallic Cat needs no introduction,” Kesler notes. “And we’re really excited with Player; he has perfect conformation and moves unbelievable.”
