Slick By Design needs no introduction in the barrel racing arena as the top-earning stallion of all time, with lifetime earnings of more than $643,000 and offspring nearing the $4.4-million mark in barrel racing earnings.
But in 2021 and 2022, Slick By Design made a major splash in the roping pen, with multiple offspring winning big across the sport’s major aged events, including banking $35,176 at the first-ever Riata Buckle in November.
Probably By Design—a 2017 stallion under the guidance of J.D. Yates—won the 2021 Farnam AQHA World Championship in the Non-Pro Senior Heading with owner Phil Tearney aboard, while the horse won the Reserve World Title in the Junior Heading with Yates in 2022.
“They’re really gentle, quiet and easy,” Yates said of the horse. “For a big horse, he can really use his butt. You very seldom find horses at that age that like to do what they do.”
Freckled By Design, a 2017 gelding, won fourth in the main average and second in the 4-year-old incentive under Relentless Remuda’s Miles Baker at the Royal Crown in 2021, and since then, he’s gone on to win tens of thousands in Ariat World Series of Team Roping earnings in just his 5-year-old year.
In 2023, the AQHA Select World Champion Heading mare HA Jackie The Gypsy is booked to Slick, as is Brittany Tonozzi’s NFR mare Babe On The Chase.
