Last fall, CD Diamond crossed the million-dollar mark in rope-horse progeny earnings to rank fifth all-time among rope-horse sires. It’s a big milestone for San Juan Ranch, which was also named the Gold Buckle Roping Futurities’ Leading Breeder for 2025.
The program that took just 10 years to become an NRCHA Million-Dollar Breeder has a sister company, UltraCruz, that produces supplements that keep the San Juan horses in optimal health.
CD Diamond is by CD Olena—a Doc O’Lena son out of a Peppy San Badger daughter with a bit of Otoe added for speed. And he’s out of a mare that’s double-bred Diamonds Sparkle (the dam of Shining Spark) with roping-royal lines Zan Parr Bar and Two Eyed Jack on the bottom. In the first 10 months of 2025, sons and daughters of CD Diamond earned $258,227, split nearly equally in heading and heeling.
He and his son SJR Diamond Mist, out of Cat Mist, are both NRCHA Open Futurity champions and Horse of the Year winners, while SJR Talkin Diamonds by Smooth Talkin Style was the 2024 reined cow horse champion at The American Performance Horseman.
The bloodline has an incredible penchant for winning at both ends. SJR Diamond Billy earned $75,000 at futurities before becoming NFR header Cody Snow’s No. 1 rodeo horse. And last fall, the 8-year-old buckskin carried Fermin Gilbert to the Limited Heading championship at the Gold Buckle World Finals. His lifetime earnings as of November topped $360,000.
And last September, Tauna Alcorn’s mare SJR Diamond Metalica placed in both the Riata Cowgirl Steer Stopping and Riata 12.5 for a cool $29,376. Having competed at the Snaffle Bit Futurity as a 3-year-old and barrel futurities as a 5-year-old, the mare was only 7 when Alcorn won both the 2024 Riata 10.5 and Rita 12.5 on her to take a staggering $140,800 home to New Mexico.
Also last season, John Paul Lucero placed in the Riata 14.5 for $24,900 on Sticky Diamond, Clay Logan won the reserve limited futurity world championship heeling on SJR Diamond Hoochie, and Kennlee Tate won the Cowgirl Steer Stopping and $10,752 on SJRDiamondGoldDigger. A month later at the ARHFA World Championships, Billie Jack Saebens made the heeling finals on 5-year-old SJR Diamond Eve, then placed her eighth in Junior Heeling at the AQHA World Show. Other futurity standouts last season were SJR Mists Apache, SJR Diamond Playit, SJR Diamond Carson, SJR Diamond Chanel and SJR Diamonds Starman.
