Queen Creek, Arizona: Where to Camp and Rope in 2023
From some of the best ropings in the country to awe-inspiring views to the movers and shakers who shape the sport of team roping, Arizona offers something for everyone.

South Phoenix may not get the same love and attention as Cave Creek and Wickenburg, but make no mistake, there’s plenty of attraction for team ropers. Queen Creek is one of the country’s fastest-growing cities but still hangs on to its agricultural roots, offering Western comforts and urban conveniences. Throw in Gilbert, Maricopa, Casa Grande and Eloy farther south on I-10, and you’ll find all your winter days filled.

Entertainment

Queen Creek’s Horseshoe Park is the host of the annual Art of the Cowgirl (406-633-3657) event the third week of January. As the name suggests, the event showcases female artists, saddle makers, silversmiths, braiders and horsewomen, and offers entertainment, competitions and shopping, all designed to raise funds to encourage other female artists to keep these Western traditions alive.

In the same vein of celebrating the fairer sex, practice your aim—or learn how— at Ted’s Shooting Range (480-840-9202), a 100% women-owned business in Queen Creek that offers specialty days for youth and ladies education in firearm safety and skills. Try out a cowboy-style six-shooter or shotgun while you’re there.

Of course, there’s plenty of golf: 58 courses within a 15-mile radius of Queen Creek, in fact, including some rated the best. Try Las Colinas (480-987-3633), Superstition Springs in Mesa (480-985-5622) and the Golf Club at Johnson Ranch (480-987-9800) in San Tan Valley, where a lunch of smoked brisket is served at the Terrace or come on Friday night for BBQ and live music.

Food and Drink

Queen Creek’s growth means you can find plenty of options in dining, from reliable chain favorites like the Olive Garden, Panera Bread and local-fav Oregano’s, to unique local choices such as the famous Queen Creek Olive Mill (480-888-9290) or San Tan Flat (480-882-2995).

If you’re out in Apache Junction, check out the Handlebar Pub & Grill (480-982-2091), which offers standard pub favorites like cheeseburgers and sandwiches alongside blue cheese potato salad, stuffed pasilla peppers and agave-based wine margaritas. They also have live music several nights a week if you’re up for dinner and a show.

Shopping

In Casa Grande, you’ll find all the shopping you want at Promenade Shopping Center (602-953-6412). Catch a movie at the Harkins Theater, grab some lunch and shop favorites from Dillard’s and Marshall’s to Ulta Beauty and the Shoe Department Encore.

While in Casa Grande, catch an auction or visit the gallery of the Western Trading Post (520-426-7702), a family-owned business tracing its roots back to the late 1800s. Stroll around and take in the classic Americana including vintage turquoise, firearms and antiques and art.

The growth in Queen Creek has brought plenty of shopping to the once sleepy town, with several strip malls like the Queen Creek Marketplace (602-866-0900) where you can grab staples at Target, find some funky footwear at the Sketcher’s Warehouse Outlet, get beautified at Sephora or find something pretty for your place at Kirkland’s. There’s plenty of places to eat once you’ve shopped ’til you drop.
