Wickenburg, Arizona: Where to Camp and Rope in 2023
From some of the best ropings in the country to awe-inspiring views to the movers and shakers who shape the sport of team roping, Arizona offers something for everyone.

In 1863, Henry Wickenburg discovered a wealth of gold and silver in the Vulture Mine. Today, team ropers come back to Wickenburg each winter searching for their own riches in the many roping arenas around the town and just south on U.S. Highway 60 in Wittman and Morristown. The small town is oft-named a best destination, and it balloons in size each winter thanks to all the visiting ropers.

Golf

One of Wickenburg’s most famous attractions, Rancho de los Caballeros (928-684-5484) is celebrating 75 years in 2023. An Arizona Dude Ranch since its founding in 1948, the modern Rancho de los Caballeros offers a multitude of entertainment options, including an 18-hole golf course, dining, hiking and riding trails, luxury spa, pickleball and tennis, trap and skeet shooting, and even a Kid’s Club with lots of activities designed to entertain the littles while giving the adults some time on their own.

Wickenburg Ranch’s (855-878-1703) desert track, known as “Big Wick,” offers outstanding views of the nearby Prescott National Forest and Vulture Peak on its challenging, par-71 championship course. If your golf effort is more Caddyshack than PGA Tour, try “Li’l Wick,” the nine-hole course that features hammocks and rest areas between holes and ice-cold beverages from The Watering Hole. While you’re there, try one of four restaurants or really relax at the spa.

Entertainment

Downtown Wickenburg provides plenty of entertainment, dining and shopping. Take in a new or classic Western movie at the renovated Saguaro Theater (928-684-7189), a classic old-time theater that’s been in operation since 1948. Then, a walking tour featuring six bronze statues imparts pieces of Wickenburg’s history. Or, see the 200-year-old mesquite known as the Jail Tree (45 North Tegner St.) where criminals were chained in the days before a jail was built. And, don’t miss the Concert in the Park (928-684-5451) series held on the third Saturday of the month.

If outdoorsy stuff is more your jam, Wickenburg offers plenty of that. The Hassayampa River Preserve (928-684-2772) offers three miles of hiking trails, where you may catch a glimpse of one of 280 species of birds, a visitor’s center, picnic areas and historic buildings. Take advantage of guide tours or explore on your own.

If you prefer to ride, rent an ATV from Adventures of a Lifetime ATV Tours (928-684-1200) and check out the local natural beauty, as well as Wickenburg history by visiting ghost towns and gold mines.

Food and Drink

While regular Wickenburg visitors know all about town staples like Anita’s Cocina (928-684-5777) and Rancho Bar 7 (928-684-2492) downtown, don’t miss Bedoian’s Bakery & Bistro (928-415-1021) for a little something different. Enjoy Mediterranean cuisine along with all-American fare like turkey pot pie and mac-n-cheese and don’t miss dessert, all made from scratch, onsite.

Shopping

Wickenburg has a little of everything in its quaint downtown area from crafting supplies and custom leatherwork to jewelry and clothing. Find something shiny for your inner unicorn at Cowgirl Bling Bling (928-684-3460) and one-of-a-kind gifts at the Rusty Rooster (928-684-6884).

Of course, ropers can get lost at NRS (928-684-7987), both upstairs in the clothing and home decor sections or downstairs in the rope and tack area.
